Queensland Police said recent medical findings were crucial in progressing the case, after months of investigating.

“Detectives undertook an extensive and protracted investigation and recently received results from comprehensive medical examinations, which indicate the child sustained internal injuries,” a statement read.

Detective Inspector Damien Antonie said the nature of the injuries meant early assessments were inconclusive, and investigators had to rely heavily on specialist medical analysis to determine what happened.

“I can confirm that there were no obvious injuries in the early stages of this investigation, and that’s what’s drawn us to rely heavily on medical examinations,” he said.

“We rely heavily on those medical expertise examinations for us to make that determination in relation to the causation. That’s what the delay has been.”

He said the final medical report was crucial in being able to charge Mr Sherriff with murder.

“I can tell you that the medical examination report that we have received, that we’ve based our action off today, is extensive, and it clearly articulates the reason why we progressed forward for murder,” Detective Antonie explained.

According to the Courier Mail, both parents posted tributes for their son on social media after he died.

“One month since you passed away and I miss you every day my little man. Forever going to miss you,” Ms Cameron reportedly wrote in August 2024.

Meanwhile, Mr Sheriff said he would love his son “forever”.

“Today you were cremated. I have no words, I love you son forever and always I told you to hit the sun and reach the stars and I know you did,” he reportedly wrote.

“I’ll love you forever my little man no matter what, death shall not make us part I’ll see you soon”

Mr Sheriff appeared in court on Monday but the matter has been adjourned until February 26.

Ms Cameron was due to appear in court on Wednesday.
