Police said the senior constable, in his 50s, was on duty when his marked 4WD collided head-on with the truck.
“It’s a sad day today that this officer has himself been involved in a traffic crash,” Queensland Police Ipswich district superintendent Kylie Rigg said.
“We obviously don’t have police involved in traffic crashes often. This is certainly the most significant in my time at Ipswich.”
The truck driver, who suffered neck injuries, was transported to Ipswich Hospital in a stable condition.
Queensland Police have described the incident as a “serious traffic crash” and have closed the Cunningham Hwy near the intersection of Warrill View Peak Crossing Rd in both directions.
Drivers were advised to use an alternative route or delay their travel, as the highway remained closed for several hours.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
