Police are desperately trying to track down a group of thieves who ransacked several vehicles and stole a police-issued firearm in Queensland.

Members of the public are being called upon to assist as part of the investigation into the alleged break in and theft of firearms at a Townsville property on Sunday morning.

At about 3.30am, up to four offenders arrived in a silver Holden Commodore with false number plates, before breaking into five vehicles parked at a secure apartment complex on Wills Street, including an unmarked police vehicle.
