Tragedy has struck on an afternoon at a popular swimming hole in Queensland after two teenagers drowned at the base of a waterfall.

A 17-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy were located deceased at the waterfall in Yandina on the Sunshine Coast on Sunday, after Police conducted a search and rescue operation to locate them.

Emergency services initially responded to reports a 17-year-old girl fell off the waterfall at Wappa Falls and failed to resurface around 2:30pm.

An acquaintance of the girl, a 17-year-old boy jumped into the water to try and locate the girl but he also failed to resurface.

A search and rescue commenced soon after with the Queensland Fire Department and Police divers engaged.

At about 3:30pm the missing girl was located unresponsive and deceased, in the water, by emergency services.

At about 7:25pm the missing boy was located unresponsive and deceased, in the water by police divers.

Police will prepare reports for the coroner for both the girl and the boy.

Wappa Falls remains closed at this time as investigations continue.
