A woman has been bitten by a dingo at a popular Queensland tourist destination, prompting a warning for campers during the school holidays.

Five dingoes approached the woman at Winnam camping area on the island of K’gari, off the southeast coast of Queensland, about 10.30am last Thursday.

She had been walking from the camping area to the ocean, Queensland Government Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DESI) said on Tuesday.

A tagged dingo from the pack lunged at her and bit her on the hands, leaving her with gashes on her middle fingers.

Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics treated the woman on K’gari and advised her to see a doctor.

“It is believed the pack of dingoes were hanging around the camping area after getting access to a large amount of unsecured food from a different campsite earlier this week,” DESI said.

“Residents and visitors to the island must be aware of the risks and should always walk in groups, carry a stick and keep food and rubbish secured.”

Rangers visited campers in the area to provide more “dingo-safe advice”, with extra patrols organised.

Being dingo-safe on K’gari involves staying within arm’s reach children and young teenagers, walking in groups, carrying a stick, never feeding dingoes, camping in fenced areas where possible, avoiding jogging or running, and locking up food and rubbish outside of tents.
