It’s fair to say some people will go to extreme lengths to keep their home clean. But, would you ever risk your life to clean the windows of your 16th floor apartment?

It seems one Gold Coast woman definitely would, with a video of her standing on a chair next to an open ledge to clean her windows going viral online.

A concerned neighbour posted the video to Reddit on Friday afternoon, saying the woman “climbed out the window and was standing on a chair on an open ledge to clean some windows” on her 16th floor apartment at the Peninsula Building in Surfers Paradise.

The woman can be seen calmly wiping the window glass as if the stunt couldn’t have ended with her death on the pavement below.

The original poster said that they were “too shocked to pan away” from the woman, and added that they called triple-0 only for no one to show up.

The death-defying act sparked a flurry of comments online, with numerous people weighing in.

“Imagine risking your life just to clean a window” one commenter said, while another wrote “she must be unwell to even risk this”.

It wasn’t only the dubious act that caught people’s attention, the design of the building also raised a few eyebrows.

One commenter pointed this out saying: “The windows are only supposed to open a few centimetres for safety reasons. So this building does not comply with safety standards.”

Another said: “Who the hell specified those windows on a building that tall. These things need to be designed stupid proof or this kind of thing happens.

“You should not be able to climb out of any window on a multi story like that.”

According to the Australian Building Code, protection is required for openable windows in new early childhood centres and in bedrooms of new residential buildings where the floor below is more than two metres.

Injuries in the home are one of the major causes of hospitalisation and death in Australia, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

Falls were the leading cause of death for both men and women in 2022–2023.

Commenters pointed out how lucky the woman was, saying “one windy day or misstep and down she goes”.
