Chaos has erupted on a rural farm in South Australia as police shot and killed a man in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Major crime detectives are investigating the critical incident at Craigburn Farm this morning where a man was shot by police.

Just after midnight police and SAAS were called to Highfield Drive after reports of a mental health incident where the occupant of a home was allegedly harming himself with a knife.

When police arrived they entered the home to speak to the occupant, a 40-year-old man.

The man then allegedly threatened police with a knife. before they deployed a taser which was unsuccessful. The man then reportedly continued to threaten officers with the knife.

Police then discharged their firearms, incapacitating the man. Paramedics worked on the occupant before he was transported to hospital where he died. There were no injuries to police.

The major crime squad, forensic response section and internal investigation section are at the scene and will be investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police will be preparing a report for the Coroner.

Highfield Drive is closed and the public are being asked to avoid the area.
