A Christmas carols event in Tasmania turned to chaos on Sunday evening when a man emerged from the crowed carrying a 30cm knife.

Police said the 48-year-old man sat among groups of people at carols in the park in City Park Launceston before showcasing a large knife with a black handle.

People around him spotted the weapon and quickly moved away from the man as police responded immediately.

No one was injured and the Kings Meadow man was taken into custody and will appear in court on Monday morning. He was charged with being unlawfully armed in public.
