‘Prepared for the worst’: Lismore mayor provides update on flooding
Lismore Mayore Steve Krieg says his town is “nervous” waiting for flood levees to break.
“We’re currently just below major flood flood level with our river,” he told Sunrise.
“It’s sitting just below nine metres, so we’ve got about one and a half to two metres of river rise to go before that levee overtops.
“Really nervous times and we’re hoping we don’t get the rainfall predicted and that levee holds.
“Everyone’s prepared for the worst.”

‘Lismore will be isolated’: Horror reality for flood-hit area
The area of Lismore, which was hit with devastating floods in 2022, will soon be isolated when the levee breaks.
“Lismore is currently in a flood evacuation position,” Sunrise reporter James Tobin said from Casino in NSW.
“At the moment, if you are in Lismore, you can head to the Southern Cross University. That’s where you can head for a safe space.
“At themoment, the river is rising and it’s rising fairly quickly.
“At the moment it’s at 8.64m.
“The levee will break when it reaches 10.6m.
“So we are watching that. When that does happen, Lismore will be isolated.”
Storm surge a major concern as Cyclone Alfred arrives during king tide
Sunrise reporter Georgie Chumley said Brisbane is now “copping the brunt” of Cyclone Alfred as rains set in.
“Emergency warnings remain in place for residents in Brisbane, Moreton Bay as well as the Redlands and Bay Islands to stay indoors and shelter now,” she said.
“Now, one of the real concerns in this area is that storm surge.
“This crazy wind that we’re experiencing now, pushing that water above the king tide, which we are expecting to see in the next hour, and potentially pushing water into low lying areas and those residential homes.”
Many locations, including Brisbane are expected to see as much as 800mm of rain by Monday.
Cyclone Alfred has shifted further north

For the Gold Coast, 200-400mm of rain is expected in the next 24-48 hours.
Cyclone Alfred has moved further north as it hits the mainland.
That cyclone warning has narrowed from Brisbane north through to Noosa, including the Sunshine Coast.
