Alex Oates: Family speak out after 27-year-old killed by falling tree on camping trip in Kevington, Victoria

A tragic camping accident has left a family grieving after a young man was killed by a falling tree while asleep in his swag.

Alex Oates, 27, died after the tree slammed onto his ute while he slept on a camping trip in Victoria over the weekend.

The incident occurred while Alex was with on a trip friend in Kevington when the tree fell onto the campground near Eildon Jamieson Rd at around 3am on Saturday.

Alex’s family released a heartfelt statement telling 7NEWS that: “The world’s lost a beautiful soul.”

Relatives said Oates was a carpenter and would “help anybody at any time”.

Family members were told by emergency services the tree may have had termites and that is what caused it to fall, leaving Alex dead at the scene.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
