Family members of a 12-year-old and 15-year-old allegedly stabbed to death in Cobblebank, Melbourne gathered to pay tribute to the boys as police continue to hunt for their attackers.

The two boys murdered in an alleged violent gang attack in Melbourne’s west have been honoured at a community vigil.

Chol Achiek, 12, and Dau Akueng, 15, were walking home from a basketball game on Saturday night when they were allegedly ambushed by a group of up to eight people in Cobblebank about 8pm.

Both boys were fatally stabbed while a third friend managed to escape the brutal assault.

On Tuesday night, mourners gathered at Bridge Road Park to pay their respects.

City of Melton councillor Dr Phillip Zada told the crowd the boys’ families showed strength in grief, offering messages of love and forgiveness rather than anger.

“The bravery of their families was beyond words,” he said.

“It was also incredibly brave for the young girls and boys from the Nile Warriors Basketball Club to stand up, speak, host, and organise the event. Thank you to the club and all involved for giving our community the space to come together in such a painful time.”

Dr Zada said the deaths of Chol and Dau must spark change.

“Now is not the time for politics or point scoring. It is a time for love, unity, and real solutions that bring people together and keep our children and community safe,” he said. “I pray I never have to attend another vigil like this again.”

The deaths are believed to be a case of mistaken identity. Police say those responsible remain on the run and have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
