Melbourne’s crime epidemic has escalated dramatically after a gunman armed with a machine gun opened fire on two homes in the northern suburbs during a terrifying late-night ambush.

Both properties were peppered with bullets while residents were asleep inside, in what police believe was a targeted attack on members of the same family.

CCTV footage captured the dramatic moment the gunman struggled with his weapon outside a Broadmeadows home just before 1am, failing five times to fire before finally succeeding in pumping around 20 bullets into the front of the house.

The footage shows the offender’s car pulling up before he raises his weapon, only for it to malfunction.

His accomplice in the passenger seat fires a shot while the main gunman sits back in the car trying to get his weapon to work.

“I initially thought fireworks but then it sounded like shooting,” one resident said.

When asked if they had heard gunshots before, the resident replied: “Yes, last Friday.”

Seven minutes later, the same gunman struck again two suburbs away in Hadfield, firing approximately 15 shots into another family home in just 1.6 seconds — all captured on nearby CCTV.

Police have confirmed the attacks were not random, with one officer stating: “It’s just attacking or intimidating one person.”

It’s believed the Broadmeadows house has been targeted in previous shootings, leaving the entire street on edge.

“The whole street is living with families, right? So that worries me,” one concerned neighbour said.

Residents at both addresses were reluctant to speak about the attacks, though neighbours described them as “very, very nice” people.

One bullet smashed through near a sign with an ironic opposite message to the violence that had just unfolded.

The Hadfield property was also the scene of a shooting last year when a fight escalated, though no one was injured in that incident.

Police are hunting the gunmen but are yet to make any arrests.
