WorkSafe, which is investigating the incident, confirmed on Wednesday the worker was aged 27 and said the man was trying to fix a problem with an automated stock collection robot when he was “crushed”.

“It’s understood the 27-year-old man was responding to a jammed item on an automated stock collection robot when he was crushed between moving parts of the machine,” WorkSafe said.

“All our thoughts are with the contractor’s family, friends and colleagues as we provide our full support at this very difficult time,” she said.

“This is a very sad day for Myer and our team members, with access to support also being provided.

“There is no further information available at this time.”
