A bizarre brawl outside a Melbourne strip club has ended with a man being knocked unconscious by a chair thrown by his own mate in a shocking case of friendly fire.

The incident unfolded on King St around 9.20pm on Friday night, after two men were ejected from Bar 20 for allegedly being offensive to dancers and other staff.

Security footage shows the pair scuffling with bouncers before being pushed out onto the notorious nightlife strip.

One man grabbed a bollard but appeared to change his mind about using it as a weapon when a bouncer moved in. His mate initially surrendered to the decision, sitting down on the footpath.

But moments later, he was back at the front door apologising and pleading to be let back inside.

Unaware of his friend’s actions, the other man walked into a restaurant next door, grabbing a chair from the dining room.

A restaurant worker told 7NEWS she tried to stop him.

“He just suddenly asked for, can I borrow a chair? I tried to stop him asking, it’s our top chair, you cannot take it,” she said.

But the man was determined for payback. He took the chair outside and flung it down the street towards the bar entrance, apparently aiming for security staff.

The bouncer on the door saw it coming and ducked inside. But the chair struck his mate, who was back down on the footpath, hitting him square in the head.

Security guards could be seen laughing on CCTV at the disastrous miscalculation, suspecting the missile was meant for them.

Bar 20’s co-owner told 7NEWS the men were ejected for being offensive to dancers and other staff. He said he had no doubt the target of the chair thrower was the head of security, who was standing at the front.

“Just like yelling with the guy and like others surrounding, they was laughing about this situation,” the restaurant worker said.

“I didn’t say anything because I was shocked and I asked for our staff to help me to take the chair back.

“Suddenly, he woke up and walked like normal.”

Despite the hard hit and fall, the victim soon regained consciousness.

It’s understood no one called police or an ambulance.
