A man has been charged after allegedly leading police on a dramatic late-night chase through Melbourne that ended with officers recovering a loaded firearm and $2000 in cash.

When officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, which police alleged was stolen the driver refused to stop and sped away.

The car was monitored as it travelled into Melbourne’s north-western suburbs before the driver dumped the vehicle in the carpark of a business on Rosamund Road in Maribyrnong about 12.40am.

Police allege the man fled on foot and tossed a bag into nearby bushes as he ran.

Officers chased him down and arrested the 22-year-old Truganina man.

The Dog Squad was called in and a police canine quickly located the discarded bag, which allegedly contained a loaded gun and $2000 in cash.

He has been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on January 16.
