A man and his five-year-old daughter were inside at the time and the neighbouring homes were evacuated.

Shocking footage has shown the moment a Melbourne home went up in flames while a little girl and her father were inside.

The five-year-old girl and her father were asleep in their Greenvale house when a BMW ploughed into their garage and was set alight about 3.45am on Tuesday.

The driver of the car fled the scene in a Ford Ranger.

The father and daughter ran to a neighbour’s house, as other residents on the street rushed out, some with hoses, to try to help stop the blaze spreading.

“(I) went out in the backyard and thought it was a tree burning down,” neighbour Wojciech Nadstazik said.

“Thought I’d get the hose, and then when I got out there it was actually the house burning down.

“I was, like, there’s no way I could put that out with a hose.”

Firefighters fought the blaze for more than 40 minutes before it was brought under control.

“(I) was watching the two-storey house next door with embers on it, thinking that’s not good,” Nadstazik said.

Police said the circumstances surrounding the crash and subsequent fire are still under investigation.

It comes less than three weeks after arsonists attempted to light another house on the street on fire.

Neighbours said two men smashed the windows of their car and poured accelerant in it about 3am before being chased away.
