A serious four-car crash has left a woman fighting for life in a Melbourne hospital.

The Nunawading highway patrol are investigating the circumstances surrounding the four-vehicle collision in Oakleigh on Monday morning.

It is believed a driver in a Mercedes sedan was travelling along Warrigal Road when they collided with a blue Nissan Micra about 12.15am.

The impact forced the second vehicle into two other cars.

The driver of the sedan, an 82-year-old Eltham woman, sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

None of the other drivers were injured.

The exact cause of the collision is yet to be determined and investigations remain ongoing.
