Two people have died and one is fighting for life after a crash on a rural highway in Victoria’s north.

Two vehicles collided head-on on the Northern Hwy about 5km south of Rochester about 1.30pm on Friday, police said.

Initial reports were the male driver of one vehicle, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

Police later confirmed his female passenger, also yet to be formally identified, was pulled from the wreckage and given medical assistance but died at the scene a short time later.

The female driver of the second vehicle was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Her two teenage passengers were hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined and investigations remain ongoing,” police said.
