Police attempted to contact the man who had moved inside the house after their arrival, but their efforts to talk to him were unsuccessful.

The surrounding area was then cordoned off before the man allegedly exited the property from the back door and fired the crossbow at the two officers.

Police are reporting that their members then “drew their firearms” and that “shots were fired at the man who retreated inside the property”.

The shots missed and the man was not physically injured during the exchange before “he surrendered a short time later” the report added.

The 26-year-old man from Eltham has been charged with multiple offences including reckless conduct endangering life, assault with a weapon, assaulting police and criminal damage.

He was due to appear at the Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday with the Professional Standards Command notified after the shooting.

Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000.
