A truck fire on the West Gate Freeway has caused traffic chaos for Melbourne commuters, with delays stretching back more than 80 minutes during the Thursday morning rush.

The truck burst into flames about 7am on the city-bound side of the freeway near the West Gate Bridge in Port Melbourne, closing lanes and choking traffic across the western suburbs.

Fire Rescue Victoria told The Nightly crews arrived within minutes of being alerted, after several motorists called Triple-0.

Firefighters used water and extinguishers to douse the blaze, bringing it under control by 7.09am.

Footage from the scene showed the truck — towing a dog trailer — engulfed in flames near the Cook Street exit.

Police and emergency services remain on site assisting with cleanup and traffic management.

No injuries have been reported.

Motorists are urged to allow extra travel time, follow the directions of emergency services and obey overhead signals as crews continue clearing the scene.
