A Melbourne family has been forced to run for their lives after a suspicious overnight blaze tore through their Yarraville home, with police now hunting the offenders believed to be responsible.

Emergency crews were called to Stephen Street just after 2.30am on Wednesday following reports that a car parked outside the property had erupted into flames.

Within moments, the fire spread to the front of the house, blocking the family’s only exit and forcing its three occupants to escape into the backyard.

Victoria Police said early investigations suggest the fire was deliberately lit by “unknown offenders” who fled the scene before authorities arrived.

Fire crews fought the blaze for hours, remaining on scene until after 6am as the home continued to burn. Police have since cordoned off the area and are awaiting clearance from fire investigators to begin their examination of what is now being treated as a targeted attack.

It is understood the incident may have been a firebombing, with a second vehicle also allegedly set alight outside the home by an unidentified person.

No arrests have been made, and detectives are urging anyone with CCTV, dashcam footage, or information to come forward.
