Commonwealth Bank customers have been left outraged after a tech glitch caused “duplicate payments” and took extra money out of their accounts.

The bank shared a post on X at 9.55am AEDT saying it was aware that “some customers are seeing duplicate transactions from payments”.

“We are working to reverse these transactions as a matter of urgency and any fees charged will be refunded.

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience. Thanks for being patient with us.”

Customers responded with fury, telling Commbank they were switching banks after they got their money back.

“Me and my partner are now stuck in Queensland unable to get to the airport because our cards are over-drawn,” one customer said.

“We are going to miss our flights! Unable to get an Uber back home even if we were to get to the airport! This is a disgrace.”

Another claimed their account had “hundreds” of duplicate transactions.

“Hope you’re going to be paying me for the inconvenience. This is theft. Looking forward to the class action,” they said.

One customer claimed they were stuck at a petrol station, unable to pay for fuel.

“Stuck at a servo, with my car keys and ID being withheld like a criminal and threatened to have police called on me and you couldn’t even notify your customers?? Absolute disgrace,” they said.

“You’ve pushed my partner and I into a state of poverty, unable to get food and fuel.”

“If I had kept my money in the bank of a third-world country, it would have been safer. Give me my money, and I will close my account. No CommBank anymore. Australia deserves better banks,” another fumed.

“Once I get my money back I’m switching to a different bank. This is beyond just a simple apology,” another customer said.

Three hours after the glitch was first reported, the bank had yet to resolve the issue.

It’s been a bad week for the big four banks, with Westpac and St George customers hit with outages that left them unable to access their money for three days in a row.
