Tom Felton has sparked outrage among Harry Potter fans after expressing his support for JK Rowling, who has become a controversial figure in recent years due to her anti-trans views.

The actor attended the 78th Annual Tony Awards at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall on Sunday.

During his red carpet appearance, Felton was asked by Variety if Rowling’s political views impacted him or his work in the hugely popular film franchise, to which he responded, “No, I can’t say it does. I’m not really that attuned”.

“I remind myself that I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world, here I am in New York,” the 37-year-old added.

“I have not seen anything bring the world together more than Potter. She’s responsible for that, so I’m incredibly grateful.”

Felton was recently announced to reprise his iconic role as the villainous Draco Malfoy, a character he played in the film series from 2001 to 2011, this time in the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

The British actor has since faced heavy criticism on social media for his divisive response, with some fans calling it “spineless”, “disappointing” and “atrocious”, according to The Independent.

“It makes complete sense that he was Slytherin,” one user wrote on X.

On the other hand, some expressed support for Felton’s decision to back Rowling.

“Thank goodness someone in that franchise learned not to bite the hand that feeds him,” another X user wrote.

Rowling has become largely distanced from Felton’s former co-stars, including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, who have publicly criticised the author’s transphobic views.

Felton has previously downplayed the backlash against Rowling, telling The Times in 2022 that he, “couldn’t speak for what others have said or what she said... but I’m often reminded...that no one has single handedly done more for bringing joy to so many different generations and walks of life”.

“I’m constantly reminded of her positive work in that field and as a person. I’ve only had a handful of meetings with her but she has always been lovely. So I’m very grateful for that.”

Felton will join the cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in New York City from November 11, becoming the first cast member from the original film franchise to reprise their role in the stage production.
