“After 34 years of broadcast journalism, I’ve decided to call it a day,” the TV anchor wrote to her 97,000 followers.

“I could not be more grateful for the range of opportunities Nine has afforded me over nearly a quarter of a century.

“Anchoring news bulletins across the day, as well as reporting and hosting roles on virtually every news program at the Network has been incredibly satisfying and an enormous privilege.”

Gardner called her years on Australian screens a “great gift”, and praised colleagues for “enriching (her) journey”.

“(The colleagues) are the reason why the decision to resign has not been made lightly,” she wrote.

The Perth star first broke into the newsroom in 1992 after graduating from WAAPA. She then moved to Sydney to work for Radio 2NX.

Gardner also spent two years co-hosting Seven News’ Sunrise with Mark Beretta before her transition to Channel Nine in 2002.

The newsreader gained notoriety for her tenure on the Today Show as well as her 6pm nightly broadcasts for Nine News Sydney.

Fiona Dear, Nine’s head of news and current affairs, called Gardner a respected member of the Nine family in a statement about her departure.

“Her versatility as a journalist allowed her to take on reporting, hosting, and presenting roles across the network,” Dear said.

“But it was her nine years on the Today Show as newsreader and host that firmly established her as a household name.”

Gardner’s departure post was quickly flooded with comments from notable Australians wishing her well on future endeavours.

“This is massive, will miss sharing a dressing room with you,” Today Extra host David Campbell wrote.

“Wishing you all the very best for your next chapter,” Nine News Perth weather presenter Natalia Cooper also shared.
