Gogglebox and Celebrity Big Brother star George Gilbey has died at the age of 40 after an accident at work.

The TV personality who rose to fame on the second series of Gogglebox with his mother Linda McGarry and stepfather Pete McGarry in 2013, fell to his death in Shoebury, Southend-on-Sea, on Wednesday.

It comes less than three years after Mr McGarry died from bowel cancer at the age of 71.

The family left Gogglebox in 2014 when Gilbey entered the Celebrity Big Brother house on rival Channel 5 but they delighted viewers when they returned to the sofa two years later.

Gilbey reached the final of Celebrity Big Brother.

Police said he fell while working at household cleaning products company EGL Homecare.

Channel 4 led the tributes, describing Gilbey as “‘part of the Gogglebox family”.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Linda, and George’s family and friends at this very sad time. The family have asked for privacy.”
