The 2025 Emmys ceremony has wrapped up for another year and the big winners were Adolescence, The Studio and The Pitt.

Jean Smart makes it four in a row for Hacks

Jean Smart has won her fourth Emmy for playing Deborah Vance in Hacks, and her seventh Emmy overall.

Hacks features Smart as an ageing comic confronted with the challenge of staying relevant in a shifting industry, but the heart of the series is the tempestuous relationship between Deborah and a young writer named Ava.

“You know, one of the best things about winning something like this is that you actually get to publicly thank the people you work with.

“Our unbelievable crew. My incredible cast mates led by the incomparable Hannah Einbinder, and our showrunner, ohmigod, beyond brilliant. There’s so many - everybody at HBO Max and Universal Television TV, and then the television Academy.

“Thank you so much, and my children, who are my anchor, Joe, my cheerleader, and everybody, let’s be good to each other,” she said in her acceptance speech.

Rogen wins for The Studio

The Studio is the favourite to do very well in the comedy categories and Seth Rogen has claimed the first victory of what could be many over the night.

He just won in lead actor in a comedy for The Studio.

I’ve never won anything in my life,” he said. “When I was a kid, I bought a used bowling trophy in an estate sale. And my parents were like, ‘yeah yeah, that’s a good idea. You should probably buy that’.

“Thank you to my wife, my mother, everyone who works on the show, my agents, my manager, the writers. Everyone who guest starred on the show. Thank you so much. This is really just so lovely.”

He is personally nominated for acting, writing, directing and producing.

Colbert gets a standing ovation

Stephen Colbert is the first presenter of the night and he comes out to a rousing standing ovation.

Colbert, of course, has faced the cancellation of his late-night show under a cloud that the network’s parent company, Paramount, sacrificed the Donald Trump critic in the middle of a corporate merger that needed the government’s approval.

Colbert is nominated tonight in the talk TV category. His rival nominee Jimmy Kimmel took out a billboard that said, “I’m voting for Colbert”.

Nate Bargatze kicks off the ceremony

Welcome! The ceremony has started, so brace yourself for three-hour-plus show about shows.

Nate Bargatze is a first-time host and he’s started with a bit about the state of TV, including jokes aimed at American broadcast network CBS standing for “caucasian broadcast system”, and the inherent unfairness of streaming services charging customers to watch ads.

The Studio, with co-creator Seth Rogen starring as the new head of a movie studio, comes into the evening with blockbuster buzz for its breakout first season.

It tied a record for a comedy with 23 nominations, and with nine Emmys already won at last weekend’s Creative Arts ceremony, it would be a major surprise if it did not break the record of 11 Emmy wins in a season by a comedy.

It could win as many as 15, and Rogen himself could win four times, as an actor, a writer a director and an executive producer.
