The 2025 Emmys ceremony has wrapped up for another year and the big winners were Adolescence, The Studio and The Pitt.

We love Slow Horses - and so does the Emmys, at least a little

Slow Horses just won for directing in a drama series as the Emmys shares the love among a range of shows. It’s nice when not the same three shows wins everything.

Good timing too with the fifth season of the excellent wry spy series returning with its fifth season at the end of this month. We are happy to unashamedly barrack for Slow Horses at every opportunity.

Slightly awkward directing category

The directing for a limited series was presented by Elizabeth Banks who came out on stage and pointed out how amazing it was that this directing category had five female nominees and only one man.

Obviously a cool thing, but maybe not something to point out right before the award is won by that one man, Philip Barantini, who has been the very clear frontrunner all season. It is in no way a surprise that he emerged victorious here.

Barantini was awarded for his astonishing work directing Adolescence, which shot each of its four episodes as one continuous shot. Among the many raves for the British limited series, its shooting style was top of mind.

Seth Rogen makes it number two

Seth Rogen and his long-time creative partner Evan Goldberg won for directing The Studio.

The Studio has lost two categories already but not Rogen, who is having a great night.

But which Catherine/Kathryn did Rogen thank first? In a list of thanks, he thanked Catherine/Kathryn and “the other Catherine/Kathryn”. The Studio shows Catherine O’Hara and Kathryn Hahn. Who was the first and who was the other?

Whoa! Jeff Hiller beats out heavyweights

Jeff Hiller in the little-seen but deeply beloved Somebody Somewhere has pulled off a huge upset in the supporting actor in a comedy series category.

The show created by and starring Bridget Everett wrapped up after three acclaimed seasons but despite its rave reviews, it never found a significant audience. This year’s two nominations (the other is in writing) is the show’s first recognition by the Emmys.

Hiller said, “I feel like I’m gonna cry because for the past 25 years, I’ve been like, ‘Well, I want to be an actor and the world is like, maybe computers?’.

“I just want to say, you know, thank you to HBO for putting a show about sweaty, middle-aged people on the same network as the sexy teens of Euphoria.

“Thank you to the Duplass brothers and Carolyn Strauss and Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen, who wrote a show about connecting, and in this time when compassion is seen as a weakness.

“And thank you to my sweet husband and my family for never laughing at me, and most of all, thank you, Bridget Everett. You told so many people to believe in themselves, and they do.”

Emmys loves a repeat reality TV winner

The US version of The Traitors has won again for competition reality TV series.

Host Alan Cumming said as part of his speech, “It’s a difficult time we live, but it’s so great that our show breaks a little bit of joy into this life.”

Emmy’s countdown clock

In a comedic bid to keep acceptance speeches to the 45-second time limit, host Nate Bargatze has instituted a new gimmick this year.

He’s put $100,000 up to donate to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and for every second a winner goes over their allocated time, the money goes down $1000 (and goes up $1000 for every second a winner is under time).

Not surprisingly, it’s already down to $80,000 - but Hannah Einbinder has promised to pay for the extra time she took up.

Hannah Einbinder finally takes it for Hacks

Hannah Einbinder has won her first Emmy after three previous losses for her role in Hacks,

She is, arguably, the co-lead of Hacks, but has always been nominated in the supporting category.

Einbinder made the first political statement of the night, crying out “Free Palestine” at the end of her acceptance speech.

“Wow, I’m thinking out loud here. I was just really, committed to the, like, personal narrative that I had that was actually, like, cooler to continue to lose.

“I was pretty committed that, had to be, right? But, this is cool too. This is also a punk rock.

“I want to thank the creators of Hacks - Paul Downs, Jen Statsky - or changing my life in every conceivable way, but not just by giving me a great gig, but by being my friends and being my family.

“I want to thank Jean Smart, who is like, the sun and I just get to stand in her warmth, and I also want to thank the cast and crew of Hacks.”

Britt Lower win pips Kathy Bates

The first semi-upset of the night with Severance’s Britt Lower taking home the Emmy for lead actress in a drama, beating the favourite Kathy Bates, who was expected to take it for Matlock.

Lower’s victory suggests big love for Severance, the most nominated series of the entire evening, and keeps that showdown between it and The Pitt alive and kicking.

Tramell Tillman beats out Severance co-stars

Scene-stealer Tramell Tillman was won the supporting actor in a drama for his role in the second season of Severance as Seth Milchik, the mercurial supervisor that oversees the staff at Lumon.

He was up against co-stars Zach Cherry and John Turturro.

“You make time for what you want to make time for, do the work, show up, and, most importantly, for the love of god, don’t embarrass me in public,” he said.

“My first acting coach was tough, y’all. But all great mothers are. Mama, you were there for me when no one else was, and when no one else would show up. Your loving kindness stays with me.”

The Pitt picks up its first

In a sign that The Pitt is going to have a great night, Katherine LaNasa just won supporting actress in a drama series.

The rookie medical drama is one of the top two contenders tonight, up against Severance.

LaNasa plays the formidable nurse Dana Evans.

She said, “I am so proud and honoured to receive this award from the academy. My whole career, I wanted to work for John Wells, and he elevates everything. John, I’m so much better when you’re around. Mostly because I don’t want to get fired.”

LaNasa also thanked the real-life nurses who inspired the character, and she gave a special shoutout to husband Grant Show, who was in the audience. You might remember Show from his role on Melrose Place.

LaNasa beat out four actors from The White Lotus including category favourites Aimee Lou Wood and Carrie Coon.
