The hunt for true love may mean moving beyond your suburb and local area according to new research.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day real estate group Ray White has revealed the top places where the number of singles are living, including where there is the greatest parity between the number of available men and women.

Ray White Group senior data analyst Atom Go Tian said overall it was women who had more choice at a national level.

“Nationally, with 107 single men for every 100 single women, it’s technically a singles’ market favouring the ladies,” Mr Go Tian said.

The study includes those aged 20 to 49, who were not in a relationship and working, according to ABS Data.

Regional romance

There was plenty of variation across the country.

“The search for romance faces unique geographical challenges,” Mr Go Tian said.

“Regional Western Australia tops the charts with 124 single men for every 100 single women, followed by regional South Australia with 117.

“This romantic imbalance likely stems from the resources boom, with Western Australia hosting over a third of Australia’s more than 350 mining sites.”

Likewise regional South Australia featured one of the higher ratio of single men to women.

However, Regional areas of NSW, Queensland and Victoria had fewer men to women than their city counterparts.

Regional Northern Territory stands as the only region where single women slightly outnumber men.

Sex and the Cities

Sydney’s eastern suburbs have earned their reputation as Australia’s answer to Sex and the City, with an impressive concentration of single women, the study found.

Seven of the nation’s top ten female-majority suburbs are found in Sydney, with five nestled in the city’s high end east and two in North Sydney.

“These areas typically come with a luxury price tag, with most suburbs in the $3-4 million range,” Mr Go Tian said.

“While Sydney dominates this list, Melbourne adds its own flavour with two inner-city contributions: Elwood and Port Melbourne.

“For those seeking more budget-friendly option, Brisbane’s Yarrabilba stands out as an accessible alternative at $703,643, offering a unique opportunity in an otherwise premium-priced landscape.”

More men

In Sydney it was the inner-west and inner south-west suburbs where there were concentrated bachelor populations.

“Sydney’s inner south-west and inner west regions claim half of Australia’s top 10 male majority suburbs according to the study.

“Lakemba in Sydney’s inner south-west stands out dramatically with 252 single men for every 100 single women,” Mr Go Tian.

He said there were some characteristics of those suburban areas, that saw a greater number of single males living there.

“Those suburbs tend to attract South Asian immigrants who have come to look for work and tend to start living in an area where there are people that they know,” he said.

Hope on the horizon

He said despite the fluctuations in some suburbs of Sydney and Melbourne, overall the cities had a fairly even balance between male and female singles.

In Sydney, there are 108 males for every 100 females, while in Melbourne, there are 106 males for every 100 females.

Mr Go Tian said those looking for love, but not finding it in their own suburb, the answer may be to cast the net wider.

“There’s no reason to despair, but you may need to look outside of your suburb,” he said.
