ALDI dog ice cream: Shoppers accidentally eat pet food after mix-up in frozen aisle

We’ve all been there, wandering the aisles of ALDI, hypnotised by the lure of the middle aisle’s strange treasures.

But for some shoppers, the supermarket’s latest novelty has taken things a step too far.

An Australian ALDI customer has sparked online laughter (and a little embarrassment) after admitting they almost tucked into one of the store’s doggy desserts.

The frozen treats, which are part of ALDI’s Julius Treatz range, have been on shelves since April, marketed as the supermarket’s first-ever pet-friendly frozen dessert line, News.com.au said.

“Julius Treatz Doggy Dessert is pup-approved and made with real fruit and veggies for a snack that’s tasty and nutritious, for only less than $1.50 a serve,” ALDI’s Director for National Buying, Andrew King, said at the time.

“So next time you grab a frozen treat for yourself, don’t forget to fetch one for your fur baby too!”

But it seems some humans took that slogan a little too literally.

“Three ALDI stores in my area have these dog treats amongst the human food,” one shopper posted online.

“I made a joke to grab them, and my partner didn’t even click that it was actually dog food. So go on, who’s actually eaten them and just realised now?!”

Turns out, quite a few.

“My 20-year-old took one out of my freezer. He told me the ice cream with the carrots was a bit weird,” one commenter confessed.

“I smashed through two of these, then went to do a double-take of the box so I could stock up on more. I started to then dry retch and I went really hot in the face,” another wrote.

Some even said the flavours of apple and carrot, or pea, weren’t all that bad.

“After reading the ingredients and realising that it is essentially a vegan ice cream, I decided to have a spoonful, and it tastes like some sort of apple sorbet. Honestly, not bad,” one reviewer said.

“They’re not inedible, but they aren’t going to win any culinary prizes,” another added.

Still, despite the accidental taste tests, there’s no question: these icy snacks are for dogs only.

Many shoppers said the packaging could be to blame.

“At first glance, I’m not sure if I would have known they were for dogs,” one wrote.

“Even though it says ‘doggy’, I might have thought it was just a funny name, like Freddo Frogs.”

Others pointed to the store layout.

“Why are they placing dog food with cold snacks for humans?” one asked.

“Bit weird they’re kept next to the frozen desserts,” another agreed.

So yes, ALDI shoppers, the confusion might be understandable, but if your ice cream tastes like peas and carrots, that’s probably a sign it’s not meant for you.
