‘You never know’: Eagles on Pick 1
Oliver latest
Clayton Oliver toured GWS’ facilities this morning as he and the Giants continue to scope out one another.
Oliver also completed a medical at the NSW club.
The 28-year-old is assessing his future after essentially being told he’d be squeezed out of Melbourne’s midfield should he see out the remainder of his five-year deal at Demonland.
Collingwood are also set to sound out Oliver, before he takes off on a planned overseas holiday to the US.
After polling Brownlow votes for fun at his peak in 2021 & 2022 with tallies of 31 and 25, Oliver failed to attract a single vote in 22 games this year in a sign of how much he’s fallen out of the top tier of AFL midfielders.

Dusty at a different type of Tigerland
The trade period often throws up surprises... but it’s unlikely anyone was expecting Dustin Martin to be having a kick at a WAFL club!
The retired Richmond legend was at Claremont HQ earlier today. Mitch Woodcock has the details.
Reidy opens up on ‘frustrating’ times at Freo
With his move to Carlton locked in earlier today, Liam Reidy has spoken about the double-edged sword of learning alongside Luke Jackson and Sean Darcy while also being behind them in the pecking order for AFL opportunity.
“It has been a little frustrating but that’s the nature of business at the same time,” Reidy told Trade Radio.
“Playing behind some good players, it has its ups and downs.
“Obviously learning plenty from them but not getting a lot of opportunity at senior level, so I am really excited to being with the Blues and motivated at the chance of playing senior footy.”
Demons keep assistant
While we wait for more trade developments to emerge, news from the coaching space is that Melbourne have retained the services of assistant Troy Chaplin.
Chaplin had been sounded out by Richmond and Collingwood for potential roles, but will stick fat at the Demons amid an off-season of change as new coach Steven King takes the reins.
Chaplin has had a role at Melbourne for nine years, including overseeing the club’s defence in their 2021 premiership breakthrough. He acted as caretaker coach in the final weeks of the 2025 campaign after Simon Goodwin’s exit.

Fixture locked in
Away from the trade space for a moment: The AFLW has locked in its final-round fixture, and there’s a big primetime slot for West Coast as they push for their maiden finals berth.
The Eagles will play in the Friday night slot on October 31 - which doubles as Halloween - against fellow finals contender Carlton. See more here.
DONE DEAL: Rosas Jr gets to Swans
Malcolm Rosas Jr is making the short move from Gold Coast to Sydney, with the small forward’s deal locked in.
The 24-year-old and Gold Coast’s Pick 62 head to the Swans, in exchange for Pick 51 and 69.
Rosas Jr played just four of his 49 Suns games this year, including two as the sub. He’ll now try to carve out a role in a Swans forward line that includes Tom Papley, Will Hayward and Isaac Heeney as small-to-medium options.

Bombers’ play for Pick 1?
Will Essendon make a push to prise Pick 1 out of West Coast’s hands?
The Bombers have Pick 4 and Pick 5 as it stands, but have indicated to the Eagles - and Richmond, who hold 2 & 3 - that they’re eager to make something happen.
Here’s Essendon list boss (and former Eagle) Matt Rosa speaking this morning:
“We’ve let West Coast and Richmond know we’d be keen to move up. Those discussions haven’t progressed too far, but if we feel like there can be a win-win that does result in us moving up, we’ll look at that,” he said.
“We’re excited about the hand we do have. We’ll keep working on if we can get up the draft order.”

Freo trade analysis
Mitchell Woodcock has assessed the Dockers’ opening trade deal with Carlton - and analyses what could be significant about the pick swaps involved.
Dockers list boss David Walls may be forced get creative to do some pick swapping to appease Melbourne and help bring in Judd McVee - and that’s where the Reidy trade helps, he writes.
Blues, Dockers do business once again
The Reidy deal is the sixth time a player who lined up for Freo has been dealt to Carlton - and remarkably, there’s never been a trade that gone the other way to send a Blue to the Dockers.
Here’s a brief history of Fremantle players heading to the Blues -
- Blake Acres - for a future third-round pick in 2022
- Adam Cerra - for Pick 6 and a future third-round pick in 2021
- Robert Warnock - and Pick 69 for Pick 24, Pick 56 and Pick 72 in 2008
- Troy Longmuir - for Pick 67 in 2004
- Stephen O’Reilly - for Pick 16 and Pick 46 in 1999
Dockers’ ruck shuffle
Liam Reidy’s exit comes three years after Lloyd Meek made a similar move to get out of Freo to seek greater opportunity elsewhere.
Meek departed the Dockers at the end of 2022, when Luke Jackson arrived at the club to join Sean Darcy and make life difficult for any other ruckman trying to get a look-in.
Meek has since developed into a solid No.1 ruck at Hawthorn, and helped lead the Hawks to a prelim final this year.
Jackson and Darcy missed just 10 games collectively this year to give Reidy precious little chance of an opportunity at the top level.
Carlton list boss Nick Austin said Reidy’s best-and-fairest campaign at Peel Thunder gave them confidence he could thrive in the AFL.
“A true competitor, we see a lot of promise in Liam,” Austin said.
“His form in the WAFL in recent years has really caught our eye, with his athleticism and ability to cover the ground a standout. We see him being a significant addition to our ruck group alongside Marc Pittonet and Hudson O’Keeffe.
“We can’t wait to see Liam get to work in the pre-season and are excited to see what he can do at IKON Park next year.”
