AFL: The Eagles and Dockers might be finished on the trading front, but there’s a host of big AFL names who are on the brink of finding new homes.

Charlie Curnow is the name being discussed the most as a potential shift from Carlton to Sydney looms, while we wait to see what will take place with the likes of Christian Petracca, Zach Merrett, Clayton Oliver, Rowan Marshall, Callum Ah Chee and more.

Stay across the day’s developments as they happen here!

How many deals will get done?

There appears to be a logjam of trades in the works - which means we’re likely to see more late-period action than we did last year.

Last trade period resulted in five deals going through on the penultimate day, and nine deals on the final day, including movement for Shai Bolton, Tom Barrass, Bailey Smith and Daniel Rioli.

Today we’ve seen just one move go through - the pick swap between Brisbane and Collingwood - as we approach 28 hours until the 4.30pm Wednesday deadline.

WAFL club pursues Rioli

It’s no surprise that WAFL clubs would be desperate to lure Willie Rioli after the gun forward ended his AFL career earlier this year.

Fresh off a dominant WAFL campaign, South Fremantle are working through how they can recruit the 2018 premiership Eagle.

Hawks’ offer for Merrett

Hawthorn’s reported offer for Zach Merrett is doing the rounds - but will it be enough to entice the Bombers?

The offer is said to be Pick 9, a future first-rounder, a second-rounder, and Henry Hustwaite.

The Bombers have remained steadfast that their contracted captain and six-time club champion won’t be shipped out under any circumstances.

Petch staying west?

Away from AFL trade news for a moment... delisted Eagle Jack Petruccelle is in line to remain in WA to continue his footy career, with WAFL club Subiaco showing plenty of interest.

Petruccelle has a relationship with new Lions coach Jarrad Schofield, who was of course West Coast’s assistant and caretaker coach for a chunk of his time at the Eagles.

Mitchell Woodcock has the story.

Aleer latest

Leek Aleer appears set to remain at the Giants after North Melbourne reportedly ended their interest in potentially recruiting him.

St Kilda dropped one of the trade period’s biggest bombshells when they last week ruled out making a move for the 24-year-old, despite the widespread belief that it would happen.

The Roos have examined making a play but are understood to have pulled out of the race.

It means Aleer is likely to accept GWS’ three-year deal that may make for a bit of an awkward return over pre-season.

Sydney’s offer for Curnow

The Swans’ offer to Carlton to attract Charlie Curnow is... at first glance, not great.

Sydney have reportedly offered Will Hayward and Ollie Florent to go with pick 11 and the club’s first-round pick next year, in exchange for Curnow and pick 22.

It would be a massive surprise if that’s enough to convince the Blues to ship out their contracted dual Coleman Medal winner.

Brodie opens up after trade

A candid Will Brodie has detailed the challenge of the past two-and-a-half years of failing to break through for an AFL opportunity.

Brodie landed at Port Adelaide yesterday after Fremantle dealt him for pick 103.

“It’s not been the greatest couple of years that I would’ve hoped for. It’s really tested my patience and resilience,” Brodie said on 6PR last night.

“I’ve been trying to constantly improve and stay ready for when an opportunity would come and there’s always that belief that opportunity will come at some stage but unfortunately, it never really did.”

BIG coaching news: Buckley joins flag contenders

A bombshell announcement from Geelong: Nathan Buckley is joining the Cats as an assistant coach!

The man who’s in line to head up Tasmania’s footy program when the Devils enter the competition is first set to learn more under Chris Scott at the perennial contenders.

“We are excited to add Nathan to our club and more specifically to our coaching group. He is respected and highly regarded across the football industry and brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective,” Geelong’s football manager Andrew Mackie said.

“In speaking with Nathan, it was clear he had a strong appetite to return to coaching, and we look forward to welcoming him to our football program to work closely with our players and staff.”

Buckley has filled media roles across the past four years after finishing his 218-game stint as Collingwood coach in 2021.

DONE DEAL: Lions, Pies exchange picks

We’ve got our first trade of the day: A swap of draft selections between preliminary final foes Brisbane and Collingwood.

The Lions send out picks 45 and 56 in exchange for pick 59 and a 2026 third-round pick (tied to Melbourne).

The Magpies nudge up the order and gain some more currency to potentially be used in a move to bring in WA product Jack Buller, who they’ve got their eye on at Sydney.
