Great start!
Gold for Matthews!
And Australia have claimed their third gold medal within a half-hour span, with Beau Matthews winning the men’s 100m breaststroke SB9 final!
After a delay for the race to be reviewed, a brilliant 1min9.41sec effort from the 17-year-old was confirmed as legal.
“I can’t explain the feeling, it’s amazing. I worked so hard with my club to try and get here and compete,” Matthews told Channel Seven.
“The last 15m, I was very, very dead - I probably went out a little bit too quick, didn’t have enough coming home, but it is what it is. I’ll definitely take the result.”
And Canada’s Fernando Lu and Scotland’s Oliver Carter being disqualified has elevated Tim Hodge - who is swimming up a classification after claiming the men’s 100m breaststroke SB8 medal yesterday - into a bronze medal place.
Gold for Harris in Aussie clean sweep!
It’s an Australian clean sweep of the podium in the women’s 100m freestyle final, and Meg Harris has won in an upset!
More renowned for her work in the 50m, Harris was out fastest of the trio and held on in a huge finish, posting a 52.90sec time.
O’Callaghan’s 53.25sec won her silver and Jack claimed bronze in 53.38.
“It’s always fun - well, not always, I’ve never done this before,” Harris told Channel Seven.
“I knew I had to go out hard, Mollie always mows me down. I was hoping, just for once, I’d be able to hold her off.
“I’ve learnt so much along this journey ... I’m just happy with the outcome.”
Easy does it
Flynn Southam and Kyle Chalmers have both barely broken a sweat in cruising through the men’s 100m freestyle semifinals.
Southam won the first heat in 48.08sec before Chalmers followed up with a 47.87 effort in the second.
Forrester holds on for gold!
Jenna Forrester has clung on to win the women’s 400m individual medley final!
England’s Amalie Smith challenged her in the freestyle leg but the Australian found a second wind to storm home in a personal best time of 4min31.19sec.
It is her second gold medal of the Games, coming after her remarkable women’s 200m backstroke final victory.
Forrester said she is “over the moon” with her performance.
“Last time we were at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, I really wanted to get on the podium ... to come back four years later and win that event, I’m just so stoked,” she told Channel Seven.
“I think I have been in really good form.”
Australia’s Ella Ramsay was third in 4:37.12.
