She moved up the field after a slow first lap and put on an early charge, which Englishwoman Georgia Hunter Bell was able to kick away from.

She misses out on silver by 0.03 seconds, but she doesn’t seem to mind as she becomes Australia’s first medal winner in this event since 1990.

“I’m speechless. I made a move on the front straight to try and get myself in a good position, and I’m so proud I made that move,” she says.

“I had no legs left at the end, but I held on and to be on the podium is unbelievable.

“I’m so proud of what I’ve been able to do and ignore the pressure and be able to perform.”

She’ll get at least a bronze but will be aiming for the top but New Zealand’s Eliza McCartney is also looking strong.

She was the last to go, having set an opening attempt of 4.45, which she cleared with ease.

Declan Tingay misses out on a medal after spending 60 seconds in the penalty box while Tim Fraser was disqualified.

“I’m pretty stoked I knew it would be a tough race,” Beacroft says.

“As soon as the pace got honest, I knew it would be who’s got the most in the tank, and Stephen was taking the piss the whole time, showing me the line.

“I can’t say my technique was great over the final laps, but I was on zero warnings so knew I would have to take some risks, which I paid off.”

It’s the first time this event has been run at the Commonwealth Games, in which the last rider is eliminated at the end of each lap.

Agnoletto was in the final two with local hope Scotland’s Mark Stewart, who had led for most of the race but had nothing left when Agnoletto pulled the trigger in the final lap, allowing the Aussie to coast to a stunning victory.

He was forced to go out front very early and couldn’t hold off Malaysia’s Azizul Awang.

A great story for the man nicknamed ‘Rocketman’, who had open-heart surgery in 2022 but takes an extraordinary gold here at 38 years old.

He does live in Melbourne so there is an Aussie connection the other two Australians, Daniel Barber and Tayte Ryan finished fifth and sixth.

“This is my last Commonwealth [Games] … I’m so happy, there’s no words to describe it … finally I’ve won a gold medal for my country.”

Australia are guaranteed at least one medal as they make up three places of the five-man final.

Declan Tingay takes a very early lead with Isaac Beacroft and Timothy Fraser also taking part but will have stiff competition from defending champion Canada’s Evan Dunfee.

Tate Ryan won the first heat before Leigh Hoffman and James Barber finished 1-2 in the second with all three to take part in the six man final later on this morning.
