Can Australia produce a big turnaround to get the series back on an even keel in the Second Test?

Pat Cummins’ side will be desperate for a response following their rout in Perth, but it won’t be easy without Josh Hazlewood and against an Indian side bolstered by the return of skipper Rohit Sharma.

Stay across all the latest action below, with play due to start at midday WA time.

Tourists steadying

India have settled into their work a little more now as they move to 1-38.

Gill, who scored 91 in his most recent innings in Australia in 2021, has progressed to 25 upon rejoining the squad for this one.

The Aussies are keeping things fairly tight as they hunt a delivery that can end this building partnership.

DRINKS: India 1-36

That’s the end of an eventful first hour, where Australia bowled just 11 overs (!) and made a dream start.

The home side can count themselves unlucky that they haven’t added to that breakthrough, though the Boland overstep and Khawaja dropped catch are more skill execution rather than fortune.

Rahul has gratefully accepted his chances and is still there on nine, with Gill looking more assured for his 19.

Cummins didn’t concede a run from his first 22 deliveries and has 0-6, with Starc producing 1-25 from his 5.

Khawaja drop

This was the error from Khawaja, who missed a similarly gettable chance in Perth.

Concerns in the field for the man who turns 38 in a fortnight’s time?

BOLAND STRIKES! But wait...

Scott Boland has the ball for his first Test delivery in Australia for almost two years... and he STRIKES before it’s struck out!

A no-ball has Boland’s scalp of KL Rahul taken away from him. Boland draws the outside edge with the finest of nicks, but it’s ultimately a huge reprieve for the opener.

He gets another let-off just moments later as Usman Khawaja can’t hold an edge moving low and to his right at first slip.

The Indian fans are up and about as they breathe a sigh of relief, with the tourists 1-22 in the eighth over.

Five overs down: India 1-15

Gill peels off his third boundary with a lovely push through cover.

Rahul is yet to get off the mark at the other end, having faced 12 balls, as we tick over half-an-hour of play.

As for Jaiswal? Fair to say it’s been an up-and-down start to his first tour of Australia, with scores of 0, 161, and 0.

India 1-10

Things have settled a little after that unbelievable start!

Gill has all 10 of India’s runs but has been beaten on multiple occasions. There’s no shortage of movement out there as the pink ball generates plenty of swing.

Starc’s feat marked the third time that he’s taken a wicket with the very first ball of a Test match - equalling the all-time record of West Indian Pedro Collins.

First over done

India are 0-8 at the end of an eventful opening over!

Shubman Gill is the new man at the crease and peels off a couple of boundaries - the second a beautiful drive through mid-off - but the Starc wicket is the headline act here. Epic start for Australia.

Cummins takes the new ball at the city end in the absence of Hazlewood.

AUSSIES STRIKE FIRST BALL!

Mitchell Starc does the business!

He delivers a full and straight ball to Jaiswal - one of the Indian heroes from Perth - and it’s rightly given. No review from the batter.

Couldn’t have scripted a better start for the home side and they are rightly up and about!

PLAY UNDERWAY

We’re off in Adelaide!

Mitchell Starc has the new ball, and the Aussies are in black arm bands to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of Phillip Hughes’ death.

Almost set

Australia have won seven out of seven pink-ball Tests when batting first - so India will be relieved that the coin went their way.

It’s a stacked top six for the visitors, with Gill jumping in at No.3 and Sharma - the veteran opener - shuffling down to No.6.

The Aussies will be eyeing a big first session where they can break through for at least a couple of wickets, if not three or four, to gain the early ascendency.
