Follow live: Rain ends Aussie hopes for miracle win on final day of Third Test against India in Brisbane
Australia will be looking to put their foot to the floor to carve out a win at the Gabba, with a defiant India and Brisbane’s rain standing in their path.
Follow the latest from Day 5 here!
Australia 1-14
McSweeney is 4 off 20, so any thought of the Aussies going into full-blown T20 mode in an effort to set a declaration score has been wiped out.
The home side’s lead is 199, with 69 overs remaining in the day’s play (weather permitting, of course).
KHAWAJA GOES!
The birthday celebrations are soured as Khawaja departs!
He’s bowled by a Bumrah beauty, offering a small inside edge to one that hoops in.
It’s a 29th consecutive innings without a century for the now 38-year-old, and he’s now failed to pass 33 in his past 11 innings.
Concern for the veteran’s future as Marnus Labuschagne comes to the crease at 1-11.
Australia 0-6
Khawaja carves away the first boundary with a beautiful square drive off the back foot.
The veteran is at the crease on his 38th birthday... and it’s fair to say he needs some runs.
We’re back!
Bumrah gets us back underway as McSweeney faces the music. How aggressive will the Aussies be in setting a declaration target - or will this just be a glorified practice session?
RESTART AT 10.40am (WA time)
We’re about to be back in business straight after the lunch break!
Fingers crossed we’ll get a decent chunk of cricket in.
It appears the Aussies will not make a change to their batting order at the top, with Nathan McSweeney and Usman Khawaja set to open.
Covers are off...
The umpires are inspecting the pitch and we’re looking a little more promising for a restart after the end of the lunch break at 10.40am (WA time) - but no official word yet.
Still we wait...
It’s looking marginally - MARGINALLY - better at the Gabba, but we’re still a considerable way away from any restart.
Lunch will be taken at 10am (WA time), so the absolute earliest we’ll see any action is 10.40am.
Update: HEAVY rain
Things aren’t easing up in Brisbane.
Bookmakers have wound in the odds of a draw to $1.005, with Australia now a $67 long-long-long shot to produce what is now surely an impossible win. Gamble responsibly!
We’ll be back when there’s any sort of update of significance!
While we wait...
There’s no positive update of any sort from the Gabba, as the rain keeps falling down and the skies remain decidedly dark.
In the meantime, here’s Jackson Barrett’s analysis from yesterday about what Josh Hazlewood’s latest injury setback could mean for the future of Australian bowling’s big four.
Rain falling, too
All the elements are conspiring against Australia!
The centre square is covered as the rain now comes down in Brisbane. There’s plenty ahead on the radar, too.
The day’s biggest question now appears to be: How much time will pass until both skippers shake hands and call it off?
