Australia will be looking to put their foot to the floor to carve out a win at the Gabba, with a defiant India and Brisbane’s rain standing in their path.

Recap the last day here.

Still we wait...

It’s looking marginally - MARGINALLY - better at the Gabba, but we’re still a considerable way away from any restart.

Lunch will be taken at 10am (WA time), so the absolute earliest we’ll see any action is 10.40am.

Update: HEAVY rain

Things aren’t easing up in Brisbane.

Bookmakers have wound in the odds of a draw to $1.005, with Australia now a $67 long-long-long shot to produce what is now surely an impossible win. Gamble responsibly!

We’ll be back when there’s any sort of update of significance!

While we wait...

There’s no positive update of any sort from the Gabba, as the rain keeps falling down and the skies remain decidedly dark.

In the meantime, here’s Jackson Barrett’s analysis from yesterday about what Josh Hazlewood’s latest injury setback could mean for the future of Australian bowling’s big four.

Rain falling, too

All the elements are conspiring against Australia!

The centre square is covered as the rain now comes down in Brisbane. There’s plenty ahead on the radar, too.

The day’s biggest question now appears to be: How much time will pass until both skippers shake hands and call it off?

WEATHER DELAY

Lightning is in the area, and that means we can’t have any play for the time being.

McSweeney and Khawaja were just about to stride to the wicket... but now they’ll have to wait.

There’s significant storm clouds hovering near the stadium, so it appears we won’t be getting play any time soon.

Here’s the message being displayed on the Gabba’s big screens:

“Severe weather is expected at any moment. Please seek shelter from exposed areas of the venue and follow the directions of the event staff.”

HEAD STRIKES!

And that’s the end of the innings!

Travis Head is the unlikely man after returing to the attack, drawing Akash forward with a play-and-miss and finding his foot just out of its ground as Carey whips off the bails.

India are all out for 260, with a likely match-defining partnership of 47 ending. What a knock from Akash, with 31 crucial runs at No.11!

Australia will resume in 10 minutes with a lead of 185. How aggressive will they be in chasing quick runs and looking to set a target?

Cummins, Lyon probing

Cummins and Lyon are asking some questions here as they eye a quick breakthrough.

Cummins is seeking what would be his 14th five-fa in Tests, with the skipper boasting figures of 4-81. He almost gets it with a peach to Bumrah that very nearly draws the edge.

Chris Robinson

Underway!

All is in readiness as the Aussies look to knock over the first domino toward victory: Claiming this final wicket.

Cummins bowls the final ball of his over from last night, and Akash Deep sees it off. He’s 27, Bumrah is 10, and it’s 9-252.

Nathan Lyon starts from the other end.

Welcome

Hello and welcome to our coverage from Day 5 at the Gabba!

The Aussies are a $16 outsider with bookmakers to produce this win, despite dominating most of this Test. That’s due to Brisbane’s weather and India’s last-wicket partnership - that is still going - to rule out the chances of a follow-on being enacted.

The forecast in Brisbane today? “High chance of showers, most likely in the late morning and afternoon. The chance of a thunderstorm, possibly severe.” That’s the word from the Bureau of Meteorology, so it doesn’t bode particularly well - but stranger things have happened!

Play is due to start at 7.50am (WA time), and the weather is clear for now. India will resume on 9-252, still 193 behind.
