Australia start day four in trouble after Temba Bavuma put them to the sword but the pitch is flat and if they can survive the new ball, there are runs to be had.

Kagiso Rabada picked up Nic Maddinson for a duck on Tuesday night and will be firing in with the Proteas needing to win this Test in Gqeberha to keep the series alive.

And don’t forget Anrich Nortje and Marco Jansen, who will be eager to make up for defeat in the first Test.

Lunch

Smith sees off the final over from Rabada but Australia are in desperate trouble as they don’t even look like avoiding the follow-on total of 225.

South Africa have been very good but there was some poor disipline from Australia’s batters again.

AUS 6-69

Close

Jansen is going around the wicket to Smith and he raps him on the top of the pad.

Smith indicates it’s high but he almost always does.

However, on this occassion he’s right and they don’t review.

AUS 6-67

OUT!

Carey goes for a two-ball duck and the tourists are in all sorts!

He pushed at a ball outside off and the Australians are in tatters.

AUS 6-65

Disaster!

Renshaw was on the hop as Jansen squared him up and he goes for 12 caught in the gully.

It’s another nice catch from Harmer who looks a jet in the field.

It was a good delivery from Jansen who also gets some extra bounce.

AUS 5-65

Oh boy! Just short

Smith tries an expansive drive at Rabada and gets an edge.

Thankfully, it half-volleyed into the slips.

Rabada push

With half an hour to the break, Rabada is back on to try and prize a Steve Smith record.

He has a very good record against Smith, especially in South Africa and at St George’s Park.

Getting in

This is a nice period for the Australians.

Mulder and Harmer are bowling in tandem and while they have been very tidy, it gives Renshaw and Smith time to get set and soften the ball.

Nortje’s injury may just be the reprieve they need to ensure they get the draw, or find a way to put some pressure onto South Africa to set a total ahead of the fourth innings.

AUS 4-55

On no!

Nortje appears to have over done it playing in back-to-back Tests.

He is leaving the field mid-over with an issue.

He tried to stretch out a groin but has left the field with a towel over his face.

That hurts the Proteas.

AUS 4-51

Drinks

Australia lose three wickets in the first hour and are going to need Matt Renshaw to dig deep for them again.

The total they are looking at is 225 to pass the follow-on.

With so much time taken out of the match with rain it will be tough for South Africa to have enough time to take 20 wickets and have to bat again.

AUS 4-48

Soft hands

Renshaw nicks his second ball but it rolls into the slips cordon safely.
