Cricket: After scoring his first Test ton, Joe Root went on to torment the Aussies along with Jofra Archer in a swashbuckling last-wicket stand to give England the honours on day one.

But it didn’t last long on day two and the tourists put in one of their worst performances in the field and with the ball

Recap all the action from the Gabba below.

Not slowing down

Carey and Inglis are still playing their shots and are showing no signs of slowing down.

Do Australia want to declare tonight?

AUS 5-315

Amazing!

Smith must go for 61!

The Aussies have lost their minds!

Smith works one around the corner with a pull but Jacks stretches a hand and plucks the ball out of the air.

What. are. they. doing!

AUS 5-292

Aaron Kirby

Dropped!

Carey has been dropped first ball!

Carse was on the money with a bouncer that has balloned to gully and Duckett has dropped it after diving forward.

Ponting has called it a “sitter”!

AUS 4-291

Ripped!

Green has out-thought himself.

Carse has been bowling rubbish short balls but got Green backing to the leg side so he could access a lightly defended off-side.

And then he bowled the yorker.

Bails go flying and Green departs for 45.

He will be disappointed with that. Thrown his wicket away.

Lead tonight

Australia are just 44 runs behind England now and are certain to take a lead before the end of the day.

The most important factor will be how many wickets they have in hand.

Imagine these two get through tonight!

AUS 3-290

T20 Green!

The big West Aussie has switched gears!

England have made their short-ball tactics too obvious.

Green saw it coming, stepped to the off-side and flat-batted the ball over mid-off for four.

Smith gets a six pulling but it was a top edge that just crept over a back stop on the rope.

AUS 3-284

Aaron Kirby

There it is!

Smith makes 50 with a quick single.

All class!

Aaron Kirby

Finding the flow

Smith hasn’t been able to get his drives going but he is looking good on the back foot through the off side.

He’s cut two boundaires behind point and then timed one through mid-on as England over-compensated.

He’s not far from 50.

AUS 3-262

Aaron Kirby

Green thumb?

Cam Green has copped a nasty blow to the thumb and it has drawn blood.

He got the glove straight off and is getting attention.

He will bat on but that thumb didn’t look in a good way after it struck right on the end.

AUS 3-246

Ball change!

Here’s a divisive moment for you!

Australia have belted the ball around and it has gone out of shape.

England are getting a new ball under lights.

With the pink ball being treated white leather, once it stops singing, thats it, it’s very hard to buff up again.

However, a newer ball. Who knows?

Memories of the Oval in 2023 are coming back.
