Cricket: After scoring his first Test ton, Joe Root went on to torment the Aussies along with Jofra Archer in a swashbuckling last-wicket stand to give England the honours on day one.

But it didn’t last long on day two and the tourists put in one of their worst performances in the field and with the ball

Recap all the action from the Gabba below.

17th Over: AUS 1-92

Stokes errs straight as Weatherald taps a single leg.

EDGE. Stokes is finding is line here, but he’s overstepped as Marnus is squared up and it falls short of the slips.

SHOT! Too full and Marnus pings it down the ground.

He gets another two after a misfield at mid-off off another strong drive.

16th Over: AUS 1-84

Labuschagne is leaving some balls very close to off-stump as the move in off the seam.

FOUR! It’s a nervy cut that’s been Marnus’ demise before but he places it perfectly in the gap to get the boundary.

15th Over: AUS 1-80

Stokes to Marnus.

Short outside off and left alone.

CLOSE! Marnus can’t get the bat out of the way from an attempted leave and it almost ricochets back onto the stumps. Very similar to how he got out in Perth.

Short on the hip as he rolls over it fine for one.

BEAUTY. Stokes nibbles it away just past Weatherald’s edge. England looking far better since Head’s wicket.

14th Over: AUS 1-78

Marnus joins Weatherald at the crease.

After going for 23 off two overs, Carse has the breakthrough and finds a line outside off.

He gets off the mark with a drop and run single into the offside.

Weatherald defends the last

WICKET Head c Atkinson b Carse 33

Head’s luck as run out as he gets a leading edge off his attempting flick as it flies high into the air where Atkinson peddles back to take the catch comfortably.

Smith’s drop costs 30 runs but the Poms have their breakthrough.

13th Over: AUS 0-77

Glorious! Overpitched from Stokes and Head lasers the drive straight back past him for four.

FOUR MORE! Too straight again, and Head goes aerial with the flick over midwicket for another boundary.

Head milks two and then a single to finish.

12th Over: AUS 0-66

Carse continues as Head dead bats one down the pitch.

Head hits a late cut but there’s a man out there now to keep it to a single.

SIX! Short and Weatherald uppercuts over the slips for a maximum, great shot.

He controls a cut to get a single.

More width as Head has to reach out to get the cut away for one. Aussies continue to motor along.

11th Over: AUS 0-57

Stokes brings himself on early and is England’s miracle man.

Starts with a full bunga that Head clips for three.

SHOT! Glorious late cut past backward point for another boundary. Australia going at more than five an over.

Ooh. Too close to the body to cut but Weatherald gets away with it and that’s drinks.

Dream start with the bat for Australia with England sloppy in their lines and Head getting that ealy life.

Weatherald has look calm at the crease after a frenetic Test debut.

10th Over: AUS 0/50

First bowling change as Brydon Carse replaces Atkinson. Was arguably the best of the England bowlers in Perth.

Full on middle and Weatherald jams it out behind square for one.

FOUR! Head finally breaks the schackles as he gets some width and just throws the hands at it to send through backward point.

SIX! Not as controlled this time as Head gets a thick edge but it flies over gulley and all the way over the rope.

50 partnership! More width and HEad gets it squarer this time, but not quite off the middle as they run three to bring up a second consectuvie 50 run stand

9th Over: AUS 0/35

DROPPED! Jamie Smith drops a regulation edge off Travis Head as he goes gloves up after being caught moving leg side.

It bursts off the top glove and past the slips. That’s poor from the keeper.

Head gets off strike with a single off the hip.

FOUR! Archer is short and wide and Weatherald uppercuts over gulley for another boundary to add insult to injury.

Keeps the strike with a single.
