The Ashes live scores: Recap from the Third Test’s Day 1 at Adelaide Oval

Cricket: It’s now or never for England - and perhaps the future of Bazball as a philosophy - as the Third Test begins in Adelaide.
Australia can wrap up the series with a win, and even a draw will see them retain the urn at worst this summer.
There’s changes for both sides, with the Aussies recalling two of their greatest-ever bowlers in Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon at the expense of Michael Neser and Brendan Doggett - while a dramatic late swap saw an ill Steve Smith replaced by Usman Khawaja.
England bring in Josh Tongue for Gus Atkinson as their sole difference from Brisbane, backing in the batting unit that has largely failed in the opening two Tests of the series.

Smith OUT
Nervous start for Labuschagne
He edges his fourth ball from Archer but soft hands see it bounce short of Root at first slip.
WICKET Weatherald ct Smith b Archer 18
Archer goes short, and it gets big on Weatherald, who tries to pull at 147kph.
It just lobs up off the top edge, allowing Jamie Smith to jog forward and take an easy catch.
It’s the third time Archer has got Weatherald in five innings.
Huge breakthrough for England, with Archer now likely to get his tail up.
Haydos doesn’t hold back
‘Not good enough’ and ‘bowling rubbish’ is the former Aussie opener’s assessment of England in the first half an hour who said he’d love to be out there facing this bowling.
Carse gives Weatherald some more short and wide stuff but doesn’t connect and almost edges one before flicking a single.
Travis Head goes up and over the covers but doesn’t quite time it for two, there’s also another no-ball.
Archer needs a bowling partner
He’s been on the money with his line and length probing away just outside the top off and getting some to swing in from around the wicket reaching into the mid-to-high 140’s speed-wise.
He’s given up just four runs in four overs, but Carse is just releasing the pressure at the other end, going at 8 an over.

Weatherald unleashes
Jake Weatherald goes bang-bang with a couple of beautiful cut shots as Carse just loses his line and length outside off a little.
He then closes the over with a superb cover drive to register his fourth boundary and move to 17.
It’s pushed the score along to 0-29 and it’s now officially a strong start for the Aussies inside the opening half hour.
Head and Weatherald’s three opening partnerships before today: 75, 77, 37, with this one taking similar shape.
Solid start: Australia 0-16
Not many early jitters for Australia’s opening combination through the first five overs here.
Archer and Carse have probed well at times, and are keeping it largely tight, with the exception of a short and wide one from the latter that was cut away for a boundary by Head.
Early energy
Head in particularly has been super proactive early here, dabbing a few into the off-side and taking off immediately to sneak some quick singles.
It’s given the Aussies a start of 0-10 through the first three overs. So far, so good for this new opening stand.

Australia 0-7
There’s an early examination for Jake Weatherald here as Brydon Carse extracts some early movement from the new ball.
He gets a couple to swing in to the left-hander, including a half-hearted LBW shout, in promising early signs for the tourists.
But the over ends with Weatherald clipping one that swung a little too far toward his toes all the way to the deep square boundary.
Smith update
As Jofra Archer gets us underway with the ball and is largely on target, with a solitary single sneaked by Head off the first over, Cricket Australia have provided an update on Steve Smith.
“Over the past few days he has been feeling unwell, with symptoms including nausea and dizziness,” the statement says.
“He was assessed and monitored closely and was close to being available to play. However, given the persistence of symptoms, a decision was made not to proceed.
“He is being treated for a potential vestibular issue. This is something Steve has experienced intermittently in the past and is being managed accordingly. He is expected to be available for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.”
Ready to go!
The anthems are done, and we’re now ready to see some bat on ball.
It’s Travis Head and Jake Weatherald to open on a deck they both know very well. Can they get Australia off to another flying start?
