Paris 2024 Olympics RECAP: Matt Wearn, Nina Kennedy and Peter Bol highlight day 12
Australia is on course for its best-ever Olympics, can they keep up their golden run on day 12 while the Opals and Sharks face knock-out quarter-finals?
WA’s Minjee Lee and Hannah Green will also be in action as the women’s gold get underway while our tack cyclists will go for gold in the men’s team pursuit after their world-record effort.
Recap all the action as it happened below.
Key Events
Aussies through to high jump round 2
On the last of three attempts Brandon Starc (brother of cricket’s Mitchell) clears 2.15m.
Joel Badenand Yual Reath also cleared and will go through to round 2 at 2.20m
Jenneke powers on despite fall
The viral dancing hurdler Michelle Jenneke takes a massive fall after clipping the third hurdle in the 100m hurdle heat.
It was a big spill but she gets up and crosses the line to make sure she counts as a finisher and can go again in the repechage.
She bursts out of the blocks to be with the leaders until that fall. Hopefully she hasn’t hurt herself.
The pair speak
“It’s a good day to be an Australian,” Crowley tells Nine.
“It’s just incredible, if you told me a few year’s ago I’d be an Olympic medalist I wouldn’t beleive you.”
It’s his first medal in his third Olympics
“It was hard to come back after that first medal,” Montag says
“But I just had to tell myself to do it for Rids and to do that was really rewarding.”
“It’s a massive team effort not just us but all our training partners and the AIS.”
MONTAG AND AUSTRALIA TAKES BRONZE
Spain takes gold at Perez lets out an almighty roar.
Ecuador hold on for second and here’s Montag for bronze!!!!!
That’s her second medal from the Games and what ba run that was from the Australian.
She finishes 67 seconds behind Spain and 16 seconds off silver.
She was 20 second behind third before just like her individual walk powered home on the final straight.
Credit to Rhydian Crowley as well who put a massive shift in after the leaders threatened to leave him behind on the men’s leg.
The final split
It’s 17 seconds now but you’d think there isn’t enough road left here for Montag to get silver, but bronze looks safe.
Final lap
Montag is 24 seconds off second with 2km to go.
The competitor from Peru behind is also closing. All to play for here.
Silver not out of the question
She’s taken more time out of Ecuador’s Morejon and his now 40 seconds off silver.
Ecuador also have tow warnings against them and one more will see them have to take a three-minute penalty.
No one is catching Perez from Spain in front so it’s all about silver.
Montag is in the medals
She’s storms past the Italian on the turn down the heal and is now a minute behind the Ecuadorian in second.
Is there enough time to make that gap?
She’s closing
Never mind about running out of round Montag is motoring along and is now just five seconds out of third.
Montag makes up slight ground
With seven laps to go in the course she is 14 seconds behind the Italian in third.
That’s six seconds less than when she began her final leg. Can she find some more time before she runs out of road?
