Paris Olympics 2024 Day 13: Team USA survive Serbia fight and launch massive comeback to win semifinal
Day 12 was a historic day in Paris as Australia surged to their best ever gold medal haul at an Olympics, is there more joy to come today?
Follow all the action live.
Timeout in the volleyball
It’s 18-18 but Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar have two points on serve here, where they can close in on claiming the first set.
Brazil has called a timeout to talk things over.
A bit happening in the hockey
It’s been a dramatic week in the hockey ...
And the Netherlands have clutched up in shoot-out to claim a gold medal - and didn’t they love it.
It was a 1-1 finish against Germany and they claimed the one-on-one shoot-out 3-1.
And there’s an early lead for Serbia
Don’t get too excited just yet - but Bogdan Bogdanovich has started really nicely and Serbia lead the stacked Team USA 25-19, with three to play in the first.
Back on terms
Mariafe Artacho del Solar is heating up in this one and the Aussies have pulled it back to 11-11, midway through the first set.
Slow start under the tower
It’s a slow start to the women’s beach volleyball semifinal for our pair Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar.
Their fancied Brazilian opponents are quickly out to an 8-5 first-set lead.
Stars are out
The star-studded Team USA are back on court, this time in an Olympic semifinal.
They take on Serbia and reigning NBA MVP Nikola Jokic, who needed overtime to scrape past our Boomers two nights ago.
LeBron James, Steph Curry, Joel Embiid, Jrue Holiday, Devin Booker will start for the United States.
Penalties
Australia is through to the gold-medal match! What an incredible story.
They did not miss any of their six shots during the shoot-out, even switching goal-keeper in a gutsy play midway through the shootout.
WA ‘keeper Genevieve Longman came in during the shootout, but they brought primary shot-stopper Gabriella Palm back in to save the USA’s sixth shot on goal.
Fellow West Aussie Zoe Arancini, the team captain, scored twice in the shootout.
The USA were three-time defending champions in women’s water polo.
Epic!
Pens in the water polo
Just like the Sharks yesterday - we are going to penalties in the water polo.
A late shot from the US bounced in off the left-hand upright to leave us at 8-8. Australia equalised right in the thick of the 200m action, just to add to the drama.
The Lyles story
This race was built for Noah Lyles, particularly after he won the 100m earlier in the week.
This is his pet event and he was the raging favourite.
But he was left third and now gasping for air on the side of the track. He had been spotted in with a face mask before the race and the talk is he is not well.
The Tebogo story
Plenty will emerge about Letsile Tebogo in the coming minutes and hours.
Tebogo’s mother died in May and he has clearly been carrying the weight of that during this championships.
He has just shown his shoes to the camera, which carry what is believed to be his mother’s birthdate.
And of course it is the country’s first gold medal.
