Soccer: The Matildas are back in action in Perth, with the hosts of the Women’s Asian Cup set to open the tournament against the Philippines at Optus Stadium.

After a barnstorming run to a fourth-placed finish at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, one of the country’s most beloved sporting teams will be hoping to go two wins better and hoist the Asian Cup for the first time since 2010.

WA product and the side’s superstar captain Sam Kerr declared herself “85 per cent” fit yesterday and will be hoping to find the back of the net for the national side for the first time in more than two years.

Raso off

Hayley Raso has been taken off for Amy Sayer.

The winger produced a lively performance, which was very nearly highlighted by a goal the video assistant referee later ruled out for offside.

Kerr nearly

Sam Kerr has sliced another effort wide, which perhaps came on the back of her not quite managing to take a brisk pass cleanly.

The Matildas captain is still moving well.

Fowler’s impact

Mary Fowler showed off some trademark quick feet inside the box, but was not able to spring herself loose and create a goal-scoring opportunity.

The Matildas have continued to look lively since her introduction, but have been wayward with their final ball.

Gorry goes bang

Katrina Gorry has burst forward to fire a powerful effort on goal, but Olivia McDaniel was again equal to the task in the Philippines goal.

With just over 15 minutes of added time remaining, the Matildas remain desperate for a second.

Fluid front four

Mary Fowler appears to be operating in a midfield role behind the front three of Sam Kerr, Caitlin Foord and Hayley Raso.

But the formation looks quite fluid, with the players happy to exchange positions when opportunities arise.

Fowler on

To huge cheers, Joe Montemurro has introduced Mary Fowler from the substitutes bench in place of Emily Van Egmond.

The rising star has recovered from an ACL injury in just over 10 months to take her place in the tournament.

Alanna Kennedy has also come on in place of Clare Wheeler.

Wheel and deal

Clare Wheeler hit a nice first-time effort from outside the box, but Philippines goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel was again up to the task.

Philippines into the contest

At long last, the Philippines have finally got their foot on the ball and produced what was comfortably their best spell of the game.

They were not able to carve out an opportunity but they may switch up their tactics down 1-0.

Mexican wave

It will not please the sport’s traditionalists, but a Mexican wave has broken out around Optus Stadium.

Will the energy urge the Matildas on in their search for a second?

Double change

A couple of changes for the Philippines.

Mallie Ramirez and Arina Markey have come on for Carleigh Frilles and Chandler McDaniel.

Matildas coach Joe Montemurro is still yet to make a substitution.
