Symonston: ACT Police release footage of moment alleged offender fires hunting arrow at armed officers
WARNING GRAPHIC VISION
Graphic footage has emerged of the moment police in the ACT had to run for cover after a man used a high-powered bow to shoot an arrow at them as they tried to effect an arrest.
During tense negotiations outside the residence, police are heard pleading with the man to come outside and to try and find a peaceful end to the siege earlier this year.

At about 1.45pm on Saturday, February 17, police were requested to attend the 49-year-old man’s home in Symonston.
The officer who was attempting to engage with the offender was struck by glass fragments after the arrow was shot at him.
After retreating and drawing their guns officers called for backup and specialist resources were deployed.
Following their arrival, the man shot a second arrow towards police.
Specialist resources successfully negotiated with the man who was apprehended without further incident.
The man was subsequently charged with using an offensive weapon in an act endangering life, and offences relating to previous incidents including breaching a family violence order and failing to appear in court.
The court proceedings were finalised last week, with the man sentenced to 22 months in prison following this incident.
Officer in charge of Woden Police Station, Detective Inspector Donna Hofmeier said this footage highlights the risks that ACT Policing officers face on a daily basis.
“Police are here to keep the community safe, and there is no place for violence or abuse towards officers,” Det-Insp Hofmeier said.
“In this incident, an officer’s life was put at risk in an extremely dangerous act. Police went to that home to ensure the safety of the man and found themselves at grave risk.
“Every officer should have the right to come to work and go home safely.
“I am pleased no-one was seriously injured and that the man was safely taken into custody and given the health support he required.”
