A woman has been charged after 71 cows were found dead or dying at a government research facility 20km south of Alice Springs.

The cows were discovered in March 2023, prompting a Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade investigation.

Initially, it was believed the cows had been poisoned however after a 12-month probe the department determined the animals had died due to “prolonged water deprivation”, NT Police said.

The matter was referred to NT Police in March this year, and investigators found the cattle did not have access to water for 10 days and were not checked on during this time.

A 55-year-old woman, who was an employee at the facility, has now been charged with an offence committed under the Animal Protection Act.

She was issued a notice to appear in Alice Springs Local Court on December 3.
