Easter drowning: Toll climbs to six after fisherman’s body recovered in off rocks in Sydney’s south

Four people have died and a fifth is missing after they are believed to have been swept into water in a series of coastal tragedies.

The massive surf hammering the NSW coastline across the Easter long weekend has claimed yet another life after a fisherman was swept off rocks to his death.

Police confirmed that people were swept off rocks in Sydney’s south, with one unable to be revived, and the other rushed to hospital in stable condition on Sunday.

At about 11am, emergency services were called to Wattamolla following reports two people were fishing off rocks when they were swept into the water.

Emergency services including general duties police, PolAir, Marine Area Command, Surf Life Saving NSW and the NSW Ambulance paramedics attended, with the two people winched from the water.

One man was pronounced dead soon after and is yet to be formally identified and police confirmed they will prepare a report for the Coroner..

A 14-year-old boy was taken to the Children’s Hospital at Randwick where he remains in a stable condition.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are underway and police are appealing for any witnesses who have not yet come forward to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Sunday’s incident brings the national Easter long weekend drowning death toll to six, with two others still missing.

A woman’s body was found in waters off San Remo in Victoria on Friday, a further two men drowned in separate incidents in NSW also on Friday, police are still searching for two more people who have gone missing off beaches in NSW, presumed drowned, and another fisherman’s body was recovered on Saturday after being swept off rocks in Tahra on the NSW South Coast.
