A five-year-old girl was allegedly stabbed in the head with a pencil by a fellow student at a school in northern NSW.

The child was taken to hospital “covered in blood”, her mother Eliza wrote on social media.

“Physically she is fine but to say she is traumatised is putting it lightly,” she said.

The mother also claimed it wasn’t the first time the offending child had been violent towards her daughter or other students.

She vented her frustrations at the fact she was informed the student was allowed to return to the school after the September holidays.

“My child could have been killed. The school has failed in their duty of care when it comes to my daughter and they still refuse to remove this child from the school despite their claims of valuing student ‘safety’,” Eliza said in Facebook post.

She also claimed the school had minimised the incident in a statement sent to parents in which it referred to her daughter’s injury as a “skin puncture”.

Eliza said she would not be removing her two children from the school.

“My children have done nothing wrong,” she said.

“My children follow the school rules and treat people with respect.

“I will not stop until the school do the right thing and remove this child that has caused harm from the school altogether.”

Armidale Catholic Schools, the parent body for St Philomena’s, confirmed to 7NEWS.com.au the child had suffered an “injury to the head” by a pencil.

A spokesperson said it was “undertaking a review to determine next steps”.

“This decision will be carefully and thoughtfully made considering multiple factors and the safety and best interests of all children in our care,” a spokesperson said.

“Armidale Catholic Schools takes its responsibility to all children, families and staff very seriously. The safety of our students, staff and the community continues to be our priority.”

NSW Police would not confirm if they attended the incident.
