A man and a girl have died after an SUV ran off the road and slid down an embankment on the NSW mid-north coast.

Police were called to Tugrabakh, about two hours’ drive north of Newcastle, about 3am on Saturday following reports of a single-vehicle crash.

They found a man in his 40s and a young girl of an unknown age dead in the car.

Two boys who had been trapped in the vehicle were freed and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
