A woman has been seriously injured when a speargun fired into her neck during a freak accident at a beach in the Illawarra region south of Sydney.

The 42-year-old woman was hit by the speargun shaft on Tuesday night on Carrington St, at Woonona Beach.

The woman suffered injuries to her neck and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

Fire and Rescue NSW were also called to help remove part of the shaft.

The woman was then airlifted to Liverpool Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police are investigating the incident.
