Gold Coast search: Desperate rescue bid for swimmer missing in canal near Chevron Island bridge

A desperate search is underway for a man who is believed to have disappeared in Gold Coast waterways near the heart of Surfers Paradise.

Emergency services and local lifeguards are combing the canals near Chevron Island after a man was spotted in difficulty in the water near the bridge that connects the island to the main roadways at around 7am on Thursday morning.

A spokesperson for Queensland Police told the Courier Mail that several witnesses saw the man swimming near the bridge, before he went under thw water and reportedly failed to surface.

Local rescue craft from the police, SES and Queensland Surf Lifesaving have been scrambled to the search site but as yet the man has not been found.
